Pie to Have Testicular Surgery

pie.202020.jpgJust a day after it looked like Felix Pie had the center field job locked up for the Cubs, he's about to undergo testicular surgery. Yeah, that doesn't sound comfortable to me either. Pie has been dealing with 'testicular torsion' this Spring, which probably hurts just as bad as it sounds, and if he doesn't deal with this now.....he could lose the testicle.

In testicular torsion the spermatic cord that provides the blood supply to a testicle is twisted, cutting off the blood supply, often causing orchalgia. Prolonged testicular torsion will result in the death of the testicle and surrounding tissues.
I think we all agree that he's making the right decision at this point. You can now take a deep breath and relax.

Even though Pie has been dealing with this injury, he has hit at a .321 clip this Spring and looks to break camp as the starter in center field for the Cubs. Pie will be out three to five days and Sam Fuld, who was Pie's main competition at the beginning of camp, will fill in until Pie returns. The Cubs expect Pie to make a full recovery and be at full strength soon after the surgery.

This is the second outpatient surgery this Spring for a would-be Cubs starter as second baseman Mark DeRosa underwent heart surgery earlier this Spring and just returned to action on Monday.
